Description:

(1832 - 1901) Adjutant General and Brevet Brigadier General, served on the staffs of Philip Sheridan, George Henry Thomas, and Absalom Baird. Fine content A.L.S., 3pp. 8vo., Chicago, Jan. 16, 1868, to historian BENSON J. LOSSING (1813-1891). In part: ‘...There are very many points touching the Atlanta Campaign and Sherman's later movements toward the Sea and thro' the Carolinas – especially the Battle of Jonesboro (Sep. 1st, 1864) and Bentonville (March 19 & 20, 1865), which has never been as carefully written up...I hoped to find time to write of them at some length...if it should be that you are not yet rho with the composition of your next vol. and wish any light on any operations in Sherman's command which I might be familiar with I shall be most happy to give it to you...' He goes on to state that he had hoped to send a sketch that was to be published in a book for Lossing to extract information on his career but that it will not be out for some time, in part: ‘...could have seen extracts of letters from Gen. Sherman – Gen. Thomas – Sheridan and others which would speak for me more delicately than I can speak for myself...I append a very brief sketch and send you a photograph...I should consider it a compliment to be mentioned in so valuable a book...You can select from my notes biographical any items you may need...' Signed at the conclusion. Accompanied by the notes McClurg mentioned, 3pp. 8vo., in part: ‘...Commanded my Co...pursuant of Bragg in Ky. the Battle of Perryville – the occupation of Nashville and later the Battle of Stones River...against my wish placed on the Staff of Maj Gen. A.M. D. McCook...perhaps foolishly I declined positions on their staffs which were kindly offered me by Gens. Geo H. Thomas and P.H. Sheridan to accept the Adj. General of Gen. Absalom Baird's Division...Served as such in the Battle of Chattanooga and the Battle of Mission Ridge (in which I had two horses shot from under me)...made the Adj. General of the 14th Army Corps. being promoted to Lt. Colonel and served as such throughout the remainder of the War under Gens...Palmer and Jef. C. Davis – This gave an opportunity to participate actively in all the important movements of the Atlanta, Savannah and South Carolina Campaigns under Sherman...Under Maj. Gen. Jef. C. Davis I was announced as Chief of Staff...' Both pieces display some toning and the biographical notes, with a minor hole at a mailing fold. Overall, very good.
