Description:

(1811 - 1868) Hungarian Union brigadier general who joined with freedom-fighter Lajos Kossuth in the 1848 revolutionary movement. He participated in the Battle of Pea Ridge, and his right arm was fractured by a musket ball while bringing reinforcements to support Colonel Eugene A. Carr. Asboth later commanded garrisons in Kentucky and Ohio. In August 1863, Asboth was assigned to the District of West Florida, with his headquarters at Fort Pickens. He was badly wounded in the Battle of Marianna. Fine content war-date L.S., 5pp. 4to., Head Quarters 5th Division, Army of the Mississippi, July 25, 1862, to Brigadier General William S. Rosecrans. In part: ‘…Major Felix Laeis, and several other officers of the regiment tendered their resignations. As at that time we daily expected an engagement with the enemy I declined to forward those resignations until the return of Col. Kallmann...' He goes on to explain he held off on forwarding the resignations as Col. Kallmann was on leave, later sending the resignations in when he learned that the Kallmann sent in his own resignation. He further urges the acceptance of these resignations as: ‘...the presence of dissatisfied officers would only increase the general dissatisfaction which is an evil of long standing in all three of the Reserve Corps Regiments of Missouri. The men of these Regiments claim that they were originally enlisted to serve only in the state of Missouri...' Asboth quotes General Order No. 22 in response to their claim, in part: ‘...It is not the intention to require the services of such troops out of the state except in cases of emergency, but they must do the same duty as other troops and any refusal on their part to obey orders will be punished to the full extent of the law...'. Asboth then states his respect for the order but his feeling that it has done little to help with the dissatisfaction and discipline of the troops, although he claims: ‘...I however, adhering to Gen. Halleck's Order No. 22 have succeeded in preventing serious disturbances except the case mentioned in Col. Schaefers report...when a company refusing to march...was disarmed and the ringleaders are now under trial by court martial.'. Asboth concludes this letter by requesting the regiment be moved to a more quiet and secure location to be completely reorganized with younger and healthier men, commanded by his quartermaster of the past 18 months, Capt. G. Ronsberg, as the: ‘...faults and their proper remedies are familiar to him...'. Signed ‘Asboth' at the conclusion. The third page bears a minor tear at the left margin, not intruding on text, which has been repaired with archival tape. Some light toning at the folds, and some show-through. Overall, very good.
