Description:

ALCATRAZ
A very rare partly-printed D.S. 1p. oblong folio (16" x 20"), Alcatraz Island, Jan. 15, 1883, a "Descriptive List and Account of Pay and Clothing and Ordnance Sergeant U.S. Army" for one John Murphy who served during the Civil War. Murphy is noted as hailing from Dublin, Ireland, having a "ruddy" complexion, and "excellent" character. Murphy was clearly stationed at Alcatraz, which at the time of this document was being used as a military prison. The document is signed by the facility's Assistant Surgeon. Very good, with original envelope indicating the Murphy retired in 1883, worthy of further research.
