Description:

(1905-1981) Nazi German architect and Minister of Armaments and War Production, convicted of war crimes at Nuremburg. Good Holocaust content T.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Heidelberg, July 31, 1970, a letter to his Jewish-American acquaintance Paul Kahn - an architect with German ancestry who, after being deported from Germany, befriended Speer in the postwar years and exchanged letters with him. In part: '...I consider the publication of your son, in which he not only publicizes cards from the concentration camps...one of the most impressionable documents of a world-tragedy. The events of the past did not confront me directly as much as here. Even the films which I saw at Nuernberg did not approach this...here a living person gives his last proclamation of his threatened life - and this in such a gruesome short reality...' Lightly ragged at top edge, else very good. Of course, Speer would later be heavily criticized for denying any knowledge of Nazi extermination plans at Nuremberg and for downplaying his responsibility in the atrocities against the Jews. This lot was taken from a large grouping of correspondence from Speer to Kahn consigned to us, and comes with a scanned and unsigned letter of provenance from our consigner, providing some further details into Speer and Kahn's relationship.
