Description:

(1905-1981) Nazi German architect and Minister of Armaments and War Production, convicted of war crimes at Nuremburg. Great association T.L.S. on personal letterhead, 1p. legal folio, Heidelberg, March 25, 1973, to Jorg Michael Kiefer. In part: '...I am pleased that you have come to an agreement...In principle I have no objection to the interview being published together with your essay, provided that, as you also write, I can double check the interview. I'll defer my final decision on whether the interview is worth publishing until I see it again...' File holes at the left margin, else fine condition. Jorg Michael Kiefer (b.1944) is a scholar who would write a dissertation regarding technocracy, later published in 2013, that used Speer's role in the Third Reich as an example. This letter touches on an idea what scholars today refer to as 'The Speer Myth.' It explains that after his release from Spandau, Speer portrayed himself as a 'good Nazi' by showing he was well-educated, middle class, and could contrast himself with those who, in the popular mind, typified 'bad Nazis.' In his post war memoirs and interviews, Speer distorted the truth and attempted to control the narrative of his role in the Third Reich, which in recent years has been proven to be much more extensive than he let on, particularly regarding the persecution of the Jews. By reviewing Kiefer's paper and interview transcripts, Speer likely removed or omitted information that contradicted his persona as a 'good Nazi.'
