Description:

ALBERT SPEER DESIGNED SWASTIKA EAGLE, ONCE DISPLAYED AT THE BERGHOF
A rare relic, a wire Nazi 'reichsadler', or 'imperial eagle', said to have been designed by Hitler's favorite architect Albert Speer and displayed on one of the entrance gates of Hitler's personal retreat, the Berghof. The eagle, measuring 20.5 in. tall with a 36 in. wingspan, depicts a right-facing eagle grasping a metal wreath with a mobile swastika at its center. The leaves of the wreath bear the original green paint, and the remainder appears to have been unpainted. Four partial brackets - which once secured the piece to the iron gate - surround the wreath, though the back of each bracket is absent after it was cut from the gate by its captor. The reverse side of the eagle's eye protrudes outwards, suggesting that the piece was somehow attached to the gate at this point as well. The eagle is also bowing outwards, also suggesting it was once displayed on the outer edge of a gate. One small crack to the wreath, marginal surface wear from age, else in fine condition and suitable for display. Sold with a photocopy of an original photonegative of the Berghof's back gate, annotated in black ink that there were '...two more such eagles in the Iron Works & Entrance Gates...' and that the eagle was designed by Albert Speer. Adding credibility, the gate depicted appears to have metal bars behind the eagle's eye and the four brackets, thus this example could feasibly have been displayed on that same gate.
