Description:

ALBERT HOFMANN(1906 - 2008) Swiss chemist employed by Sandoz Pharmaceuticals whose experiments synthesizing lysergic acid resulted in his creation of LSD. Hofmann accidentally dosed himself and described his experience as: "an uninterrupted stream of fantastic images of extraordinary plasticity and vividness and accompanied by an intense kaleidoscopic play of colors." Hofmann later synthesized the psychoactive components of hallucinogenic mushrooms. Signed booklet, "World Science and Mystical Experience", 22pp., published in German in 1994 by Der Grune Zweig [The Green Branch], an independent publisher specializing in esoteric topics and known for publishing the original works of Timothy Leary. The booklet contains Hofmann's views of science and its role in expanding quasi-religious consciousness and reads, in part: "...Through the progress of science is the wholeness of the world and our Oneness with it, our minds ever clearer...". Boldly signed "Albert Hofmann" in blue ink across a b/w picture of Hofmann in a bust pose on the first free endpaper. Of most interest, however, is the original sketch that Hofmann pens on the page opposite the first article, that is, a representation of LSD's chemistry! Executed in blue ink, it shows a linking the various chains of acids and noting their elemental names and marks it "LSD" at bottom. Fine condition.
