Description:

ALBERT G. JENKINS
(1830 - 1864) Confederate brigadier general, and First Confederate Congressman, wounded at Gettysburg. He would again be wounded and then captured at Cloyd's Mountain on May 9, 1864, dying shortly after having a limb amputated. Very rare war-date A.L.S. with fine military content, penned only three days before he received his mortal wound, ‘Hd. Qtrs. Dept. W.Va., Narrows of New River', May 6, 1864, to ‘Col. Wm. L. Jackson Comdg. Jacksons River Depot', in full: ‘I am left in command of this Dept. and you are ordered by Genl. [John Cabell] Breckinridge to report to me. Move your whole force immediately to a point six miles east of Union Monroe County where you will find plenty of grass, except a small body of forty or fifty men whom you will leave under a good officer to scout over your old point and direct him to me – point his information to me at this point by telegraph from Jacksons river depot. If your transportation horses are broken down your men must carry enough provisions to last them to Union where you will find some supplies under Major Newman. Move at once Colonel with the troops you have in hand and leave an officer behind to collect detachments & bring them up. Don't lose an hour.' He signs ‘A.G. Jenkins' in black ink at the conclusion, adding his rank ‘Brig. Genl. Comdg.' Shows original mailing folds, with toning and some stains overall. In very good condition overall.
