Description:

ALBERT EINSTEIN
(1879-1955) American physicist whose Theory of Relativity and studies of mass and energy relationships revolutionized the field of physics. Fine T.L.S. 1p. 4to., Potsdam, Oct. 8, 1931, in German to Margarette Upmann in Zehlendorf. In part: "...You have it completely right. I also find it very unpleasant that my name has been associated with the English group. This is partly my fault since I have been favorably outspoken over the project. As a matter of fact, I must say to myself, that I understand too little of these linguistic problems to be able to judge...I will in the future keep my opinions to myself...". Einstein is possibly referring to the legacy of Lord Richard Haldane's volume The Reign of Relativity published in 1921, which on some level repudiated the limitations of Einstein's theory which he claimed was generated almost solely from observations in the physics. Putting forth what he called "a fresh route of approach to a view of nature towards which philosophical reflection was being impelled", Haldane sought to put forth a theory which encompassed wider philosophical considerations. It is not surprising that Einstein would not want to be aligned with such a theory! A couple of small insignificant stains, otherwise very light mounting strips to edges and in very good condition.
