Description:

ALBERT BORMANN (1902 - 1989) Wehrmacht general and adjutant to Adolf Hitler. Hitler much liked and trusted Bormann, although he and his brother Martin disliked each other intensely. Scarce war-date T.L.S. as NSKK-Gruppenfuhrer, 1p. oblong 8vo., Berlin, Dec. 15, 1943, to Alfred Rosenberg's personal adjutant Dr. WERNER KOEPPEN (1910-1994). In full: "I forward you the letter enclosed with a request for information as to whether the assertion of the [propaganda magazine] 'Hammer' at that time is correct." Bormann signs boldly at the conclusion in black ink. Shows a vertical fold, file holes at the left edge and a paper clip mark at top left, else very good. The letter is accompanied by a retained copy of an unsigned typed letter, 2pp. 4to., [n.p.], Jan. 10, 1944, presumably from Koeppen, answering Bormann's question and identifying the assertion left unstated in the letter above, in small part: "On your letter of December 15, 1943, with the question of whether [Italian Marshall Rodolfo] Graziani is a Jew, I can give you the following information after answering the question of the World Service: In the summer of 1935, the 'Israelitische Wochenblatt' from Zurich ... brought up the news that Graziani was a Jew. The 'Israelitische Wochenblatt' is generally considered to be a serious source of such information. Similarly, the Milan correspondent of the World Service pointed out that Graziani was a Jew. In the 'World Service'... the following note was brought..." The letter then reprints the above news article alleging that Graziani is a "...rassenreiner Jude..." ("pure-race Jew"), as well as a second article from a Canadian Fascist newspaper, containing the line: "...Two Jews who lead the Christians to the slaughterhouse!" The letter concludes: "...The study of the question has become understandable in the years of the alliance with Italy in the background. The efforts of our department to bring complete clarity to the matter have so far been unsuccessful..." This second letter shows chips to the edges, file holes to the left edge and staple and paper clip marks at top left, else very good. Two pieces.
