Description:

(ALBANY QUARTERMASTER'S ACCOUNTS) An enormous and fascinating set of ledger sheets retained by Major Nicholas Quakenbush (1734-1813), Assistant Deputy Quartermaster for the Continental Army at Albany, New York. In this capacity, Quakenbush, situated roughly half way between Albany and Montr?al, was one of the most important people in the region, coordinating critical supplies that would ultimately result in the defeat of Burgoyne at Saratoga in 1777 and help secure the Mohawk valley frontier against Loyalist and Indian raids. The accounts, a massive manuscript document consisting of four string-bound double folio (36" x 26") sheets folded to folio size, 6pp. filled in, Albany, Mar. to May 1781 document in great detail "Articles delivered". The account notes the date, the voucher number, "To Whom Delivered " and "By whose Order " and then provides a long set of columns to account for almost every conceivable article, ranging from horses to pikes, a wide variety of tools, all types of lumber, as well as foodstuffs. The document is also a testament to the continuing presence of slavery in New York: several of the deliveries were performed by slaves. For example on April 26, 1781 "Francis Glen 0 Negro " delivered 150 tents. On May 7, "Tom Negro " delivered 20 quires of writing paper. An important set of accounts revealing much about the logistics of running a quartermaster department. A few minor dampstains, very light soiling, otherwise fine condition. $1,000-1,500
