Description:

A large group of documents and photographs related to the construction of the 'Alaskan Highway' built during World War II to connect the contiguous Unites States to Alaska through the Canadian Yukon territory. Included are approx. 200 photographs, varying sizes, b/w, following U.S. Army engineers in the Yukon territory before, during and after the construction of the highway. Scenes include the men in different Alaskan towns, operating heavy machinery, interacting with indigenous populations and wildlife, hunting, visiting scenic locations, and more. The accompanying approx. 40 documents were once the property of a former U.S. Navy seaman named William Bollinger who was discharged from service per his request to work on the highway. Included are records with his personal information, maps of the Alaska highway, ration cards, associated newspaper publications, Arctic survival handouts, picture books, and more. Conditions vary, mostly worn. Approx. 240 items. The official construction of the Alaskan Highway began in March of 1942, as the recently started war with Japan spurred Franklin D. Roosevelt's plans of its construction into action. He wanted the highway completed in order to provide support to the Alaskan territory in the event of a Japanese invasion. Most of the labor was completed by roughly 10,000 members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the road itself was completed in seven months.
