ALABAMA PROVISIONAL GOVERNOR'S LETTER TO ANDREW JOHNSON
A very rare early Reconstruction-era Provisional Governor of Alabama pre-printed letter sheet addressed to President Andrew Johnson, 1p. 4to., by LEWIS ELIPHALET PARSONS adding title as provisional Governor, Executive Department of Alabama, Montgomery, August 26, 1865. In part: "...I take great pleasure in endorsing the recommendation of Mr. Wheelan for the officer of District attorney for the Southern District of Ala. I cordially adopt the terms in which he is recommended by James Q. Smith...". Parsons (1817-1895) was an Alabama attorney and state senator during the war. He became Alabama's nineteenth governor being appointed by Johnson on June 21, 1865 and served until December of that year. Light soiling else very good.
