Description:

AFRIKA KORPS PANZER TROOPS NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICER'S M40 TUNIC
A very fine, first-pattern Wehrmacht tropical M40 tunic or field blouse, constructed of olive-green cotton drill, closed at the front with pebbled five metal buttons, each marked ‘H W' on the reverse and secured through holes in the fabric with ‘S' rings. Pleated patch pockets with scalloped flap closures fitted at each breast and both sides of the waist, the flaps closed with additional buttons as described above. The open-lapel collar is trimmed with brown-yellow ribbon sewn on with gray thread, and the lapels each bear a possibly field-made collar tab of black wool on a red wool backing, each with a metal totenkopf sewn through the eyeholes at center, indicative of panzer troops. The shoulder straps are constructed of brown cotton twill with a brown wool backing, trimmed with the same ribbon as seen on the collar and with pinkish-red wool piping, and secured with additional pebbled buttons. A machine-embroidered eagle insignia patch of gray thread on a yellow-brown wool backing is sewn to the right-hand breast, partially covering the top of the pocket flap. A ribbon for the Iron Cross, Second Class is affixed through the second buttonhole and sewn to the tunic on the reverse, and a ribbon bar for the ‘Ostmedaille' (Eastern Medal) and the African Service Medal is sewn over the left-hand pocket. This pocket also bears a Panzer Assault Badge in Bronze, maker-marked ‘A. S.' on the reverse and showing oxidation and wear to the finish overall, as well as a Wound Badge in Black, showing much wear and exposing the underlying brass. The cuffs are each fitted with two paperboard adjustment buttons, and a first aid kit pouch with a paperboard button closure is sewn inside the right-hand side. The left-hand sleeve opening is reinforced in a different color cloth than the rest of the interior. No maker's or owner's markings are present. Shows expected wear, with no appreciable tears, fraying or major stains. In very good condition overall.
