Description:

(AERO CLUB OF AMERICA) RIGID AIRSHIP EPHEMERA
Good lot of ten documents, photographs, and other printed items related to rigid airships and lighter-than-air travel, both actual and speculative, from the archives of the Aero Club of America, the first national organization in the United States to license pilots. The items include: A flyer advertising tours of the U.S. Navy airships MACON and LOS ANGELES at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station in 1933, with an illustration of the MACON; a handbill advertising shares in an airship designed by inventor William H. Boyes, which is touted as possessing an air-to-ground elevator, amphibious landing capability, and the ability to carry eighty airplanes, illustrated with an image of the proposed contraption; a patent application for a dirigible mooring system designed by J. A. Steinmetz, with line drawings of the device; a handbill advertising shares in a rigid airship designed by inventor George A. Chaddock, with lift provided by twenty-four large propellers mounted on the underside, illustrated with a line drawing of the contraption; an essay explaining the principles of an "aerocruiser" designed by inventor Thomas Finley, which is touted as combining the best features of an airplane, a helicopter, and a parachute; a blueprint drawing of a Goodyear Type C Military Observation Ballon, with explanatory letters; a dictionary of observation balloon terms, in French and English, published by the Government Printing Office in 1918; a newswire photograph of the British airship Z.R.2, the largest airship in the world when it was purchased by the United States in 1919, with a newswire article explaining the purchase; a report published by the British military's Aeronautical research Committee, concerning pressure tests conducted on the airship R.33, illustrated with line diagrams of the airship; and a report given by Italian airship pioneer Umberto Nobile to the International Air Congress in 1933, concerning his recent advancements in airship technology, illustrated with numerous line diagrams and photographs of these airships. An interesting look at early aviation innovation, with excellent visual appeal. Sold with a group of Aero Club letters and documents, unchecked by us. Should be seen.
