Description:

(AERO CLUB OF AMERICA) AVIATION PHOTOGRAPHS
Good lot of nine first- and second- generation photographs from the archives of the Aero Club of America, the first national organization in the United States to license pilots. The photos depict a variety of eras and subjects, including: Governor Charles Gates of Vermont, seated in a Wright biplane and surrounded by soldiers and aircrew; a portrait of Lt. Al Williams, winner of the 1923 Pulitzer Trophy on behalf of the U.S. Navy; a shot of Capt. Roscoe Turner, three-time winner of the Thompson Trophy, with admirers in front of a Curtiss biplane; a view of a factory floor, showing the manufacture of Napier Aero engines; two shots depicting a flight made by King Albert I of Belgium in a Curtiss flying boat, showing him in flying gear and an overall view of the aircraft; a photograph of Raynal Boling, an aviation pioneer and the first American air service officer killed in World War I; a view of the Fokker-Napier biplane flown by Argentine aviator Pedro Zanni during his attempt to circumnavigate the world, on the ground in Iraq; and a group photo of aviators in front of a single-engine fighter at Moses Lake Army Air Base, dated 1944, with the names of the subjects inscribed on the verso. Most photos feature photographers' backstamps, and many are accompanied by letters explaining their contents. Many of these photographs would have been reprinted in the Aero Club's publications and promotional materials. Sold with a group of Aero Club letters and documents, unexamined by us. Should be seen.
