Description:

ADOLF HITLER'S PEN AND LEATHER DESK PAD FROM THE BERGHOF
An important relic, Adolf Hitler's personal green leather desk blotter recovered by an American soldier from the ruins of his Berghof at Berchtesgaden. The blotter, measuring 256" x 16 3/4" fully opened, bears a medium green pebbled leather surface with a right-facing gilt eagle on the front cover, framed by two gilt borders. Within, the right side bears a blotter tucked into leather corners which also bear gilt trim. Opposite is a pocket into which stationery could be secured. The entire portfolio is lined in beige linen. The portfolio has a small leather loop at center in which a pen may be secured. Also present is a ca. 1940 Haro glass-nibbed ink pen with screw-on top. Such a pen would be dipped into an inkwell repeatedly during use, and would not have been used by someone writing extensively. The cap bears a small chip. Four sheets of Hitler's personal "Der Fuhrer" stationery are included, presumably found with the desk pad and pen. The outside corners of the blotter are worn else very good. These relics are from the personal collection of Chris Devine, noted militaria dealer. They are sold with Devine's initial research prepared after he obtained the portfolio from a close friend of Lt. Col. Carl William Kohls (G-4), 101st Airborne and on the staff of Gen. Maxwell Taylor. Notes indicate that Kohls gave the portfolio to his friend when they met at the War Hero Parade in Philadelphia in 1945. The recipient also advised he had received a personal call from Gen. Taylor on Dec. 19, 1945, just before the start of the Battle of the Bulge. Kohls' biographical data from a West Point Class of 1931 reference is also included.
