Description:

ADOLF HITLER'S NUMBERED BEER GLASS FROM THE BURGERBRAUKELLER
Perhaps the most important of all Adolf Hitler tableware to come to market, Adolf Hitler's personal engraved beer glass from the Burgerbraukellar, the scene of the launch of his abortive 1923 Beer Hall Putsch which launched his rise to power ten years later. This fine spun glass vessel measures 8 in. tall and 3 3/8 in. wide at the top. A large 3 1/4 x 2 1/2 in. eagle has been expertly engraved with a copper wheel to one side of the glass, just above Hitler's similarly-engraved initials 'A.H.' and his number '1.' The opposite side of the glass is lightly engraved: '0.5L' with a fill mark, probably original to the glass. Very fine condition. It has been, and remains a tradition in German beer halls for honored guests to keep their glasses and steins on the premises. Undoubtedly, during the war this glass was kept safe and secure and eventually was hidden to protect if from looting citizens and GIs. The Burgerbraukeller was a integral part of Hitler's life. It was there that Hitler launched the Beer Hall Putsch in November 1923 and where he announced the re-establishment of the Nazi Party in February 1925. After Hitler seized power in 1933, he commemorated each anniversary on the night of 8 November with an address to the Alte Kampfer (Old Fighters) in the great hall of the Burgerbraukeller. We believe that it is from this period of time that our glass was used by Hitler. The Burgerbraukeller served as an American Red Cross Club starting in late 1945 and became a Special Services club in September 1947. With the departure of American forces in 1957, the beer hall was taken over by the Lowenbrau beer company. According to our consignor, a 50+ year collector, it was shortly after the American departure that this glass, as well as a few of other members of the Nazi hierarchy, were discovered and taken from the premises by a German worker. Our consignor purchased three of these glasses: Hitler, Hess, and one other. The Hess and other glass were sold over fifteen years ago - only this historic, evocative Hitler glass remains.
