Description:

ADOLF HITLER
(1889 - 1945) Fuhrer of Germany and Nazi Party leader, Hitler's bloody rise to power, his military seizure of most of Europe and North Africa and his genocidal racial policies culminated in suicide in his Berlin bunker as Russian troops approached. HITLER WRITES A NAZI PASTOR: 'THE RISE OF OUR MOVEMENT IS TRULY A MAGNIFICENT ONE...' Extraordinary, fine content and association A.L.S. on his early gilt monogram 'A H' letterhead, 2pp. 8vo., Haus Wachenfeld (later, renamed the Berghof), Berchtesgaden, Jan. 6, 1929, to 'Herr Pastor', Max Sauertieg in Ansbach. Hitler writes to the Protestant minister, a devoted member of the NSDAP, the S.A., and a rabid Nazi who strongly supported Streicher's 'Der Sturmer' newspaper. Hitler writes, in part: '...First I would like to thank you and your wife for the small gift at the occasion of Christmas. If only today I am getting around to fulfilling this obligation of gratitude, the reason is not only the great amount of work which I recently had, but above all the circumstance that I was hoping to get a little quiet and time after the holidays in Berchtesgaden. This to be sure came true only to a limited extent. There is always something one has not thought about before...Something else that would probably make you, dear minister, the happiest is something that is the concern of all of us: The freedom of our people and [of our] fatherland. And in this respect I have higher hopes than ever! The rise of our movement is truly a magnificent one. I am often almost afraid that now it is again going too fast. But the most beautiful gift for the New Year lies in this happy consciousness....' Sold with the holograph transmittal envelope canceled in Berchtesgaden, Jan. 9, 1929. Interestingly, the verso of the envelope bears a return address with the signature of RUDOLF HESS (1894-1987) who would become Deputy Fuhrer and second in command after Goering. In pencil, Hess signs his name and adds the return address: 'Berchtesgaden Obersalzberg Haus Wachenfeld' Very good. Of course, Hess and Hitler were close friends at the time, and Hess served at times as Hitler's private secretary, so his name on this envelope is no surprise. A clean one inch horizontal fold split, else fine. The Nazi Party's efficient recruitment and organizational structure helped it grow quickly in the late Twenties, and the party also owed its growth to the gradual fading away of competitor nationalist groups, such as the German National People's Party (DNVP). As Hitler became the recognized head of the German nationalists, other groups declined or were absorbed. The chaos caused by the October 29, 1929 Wall Street collapse would pave the way for Hitler's rise to the top of the German government.
