Description:

ADOLF HITLER
(1889 - 1945) Fuhrer of Germany and Nazi Party leader, Hitler's bloody rise to power, his military seizure of most of Europe and North Africa and his genocidal racial policies culminated in suicide in his Berlin bunker as Russian troops approached. An excessively rare good content A.L.S. written by Hitler to a female supporter from Landsberg Prison in December, 1924. Hitler and several co-defendants from the abortive 'Beer Hall Putsch' of Nov. 8, 1923 were imprisoned at Landsberg on April 1, 1924 and Hitler remained incarcerated there for only nine months of his five-year sentence, still allowing him time to write his political manifesto, 'Mein Kampf'. The letter, 1p. 7 x 4.5 in., was written from Hitler's jail cell a scant two weeks before his release. It reads in full: 'Most venerable gracious lady! Please take this as a sign of my unreserved admiration for the services you have rendered to the German people! Your very devoted and grateful Adolf Hitler Landsberg 5/Dec. 1924' This boldly penned letter shows some damp staining which does not substantially detract, and is in otherwise fine condition. This letter was sent to the recipient of a Hitler signed book elsewhere in this auction, one 'Anneliese von L.' (1909-1939), godmother of the man who sold the letter to our consignor. She was the second child of a wealthy family, and 'maintained a lively relationship with leading personalities from politics, business and culture'. Our research has failed to turn up the identity of the young woman Hitler has written to, but we believe that in offering her such effusive praise, she most likely had supported him in some manner during his incarceration. Hitler and the woman remained friends until at least 1933 - the year the book mentioned above which Hitler signed and gave to her was published. An extraordinarily rare letter sent from prison - the first such example we have seen in 35 years!
