Description:

ADOLF HITLER
(1889 - 1945) Führer of Germany and Nazi Party leader, Hitler's bloody rise to power, his military seizure of most of Europe and North Africa and his genocidal racial policies culminated in suicide in his Berlin bunker as Russian troops approached. Excellent association I.S.P., 5" x 7" b/w, a chest, up portrait by Hoffmann showing Hitler from mid-chest, up, boldly inscribed at bottom: "For Ursula Kerrl in remembrance of our recent July trip, 1935 Adolf Hitler". Set in the original silver presentation frame hallmarked "FLOREAT[?]" above two concentric diamonds, with the reverse and stand-up easel covered in red pebbled leather. The photo, set into a modern mat, bears a small spot above the signature and a tiny scuff at lower left, the frame is heavily tarnished, else this item is in very good condition. Ursula Kerrl was undoubtedly a close relation to, possibly the wife of HANNS KERRL (1887-1941). Kerrl, who had joined the NSDAP in 1923, served as Reichsminister of Church Affairs. On the one hand, Kerrl was supposed to mediate between those Nazi leaders who hated religion (Heinrich Himmler, for example) and the churches themselves and stress the religious aspect of the Nazi ideology. On the other hand, it was Kerrl's job to subjugate the churches and their leaders and subordinate them to the greater goals decided by the Führer. So drawn-in was Kerrl, he once dubbed Hitler 'Germany's Jesus Christ'.
