Description:

ADOLF HITLER
(1889 - 1945) Fuhrer of Germany and Nazi Party leader, Hitler's bloody rise to power, his military seizure of most of Europe and North Africa and his genocidal racial policies culminated in suicide in his Berlin bunker as Russian troops approached. Important association A.L.S. with initialed postscript, 1p. 12mo., [n. p., ca. 1929], a two-sided Christmas card sent to Winifred Wagner in Bayreuth, wife of Siegfried Wagner, the composer Richard Wagner's son. Writing in highly formal, stilted German, Hitler asks Frau Wagner to accept the photograph of him and her daughter Verena as a "little gift", a souvenir of "our day", and in the postscript asks that she extend his best wishes to her husband. The photo Hitler refers to is included, 3" x 2 1/4", with a very serious Hitler shown three-quarter length standing beside the young lady. Also included is the front panel of Hitler's holograph envelope addressed to Wagner. With two 1975 letters from historian/dealer Ben Swearingen to Dr. John Lattimer describing the letter. In 1923, Winifred met Adolf Hitler, who greatly admired Wagner's music. When Hitler was jailed for his part in the Munich Beer Hall Putsch, Winifred sent him food parcels and stationery on which Hitler's autobiography Mein Kampf may have been written. In the late 1930s, she served as Hitler's personal translator during treaty negotiations with England. The photo bears a small crease and some wear at margins, otherwise all three pieces are very good.
