Description:

(1889 - 1945) Fuhrer of Germany and Nazi Party leader, Hitler's bloody rise to power, his military seizure of most of Europe and North Africa and his genocidal racial policies culminated in suicide in his Berlin bunker as Russian troops approached. HITLER INSCRIBES A BOOK TO A FORMER LOVER An extremely fine signed book with personal presentation, "Sieh: Das Herz Europa" ("See: The Heart of Europe"), by Stanley McClatchie (Berlin: Verlag Heinrich Hoffman), [1937], 252pp. 4to., a very scarce deluxe edition finely bound in cream-colored vellum boards with gilt title and embellishments. Hitler signs on the front flyleaf in black ink, adding the inscription: "Frl. [Fraulein] Jeni Haug zum Weinachtsfest 1937 in herzlicher Verehrung" ("Miss Jeni Haug for Christmas 1937 in warm veneration"). Shows slight warping and bumps to the edges of the boards, with slight verdigris stains to the spine, else very good to fine. EUGENIE "JENI" HAUG (1891-1944) was the sister of Hitler's first chauffeur, Ernst Johann Haug. In the early days of the NSDAP, Jeni and her brother acted as bodyguards, and she is purported to have become his lover in 1923. Despite being an ardent Nazi, Hitler's inner circle convinced him that she was too unsophisticated to maintain a relationship with the Fuhrer once he was named Chancellor. The volume is housed in a later custom slipcase, along with its period English edition, "Look to Germany: The Heart of Europe", (Berlin: Verlag Heinrich Hoffman), [1937], 260pp. 4to., showing some wear to the covers and bumps to the spine, with slight toning to the page edges, else very good. STANLEY MCCLATCHIE was a wealthy Californian who lived in Weimar Germany during the depression of the late 1920s. Returning to Germany for the 1936 Olympics, he was impressed by the industrial, technological and social revolution under Hitler, and published the above book, profusely illustrated with photographs by himself, Heinrich Hoffmann, and numerous other German photographers of the day, in order to encourage other nations to follow the example of the Third Reich. The bulk of both the English and German editions were destroyed during and after World War II, making both of the editions described above quite rare, even without the personal connection to Hitler.
