ADOLF HITLER
(1889 - 1945) Fuhrer of Germany and Nazi Party leader, Hitler's bloody rise to power, his military seizure of most of Europe and North Africa and his genocidal racial policies culminated in suicide in his Berlin bunker as Russian troops approached. HITLER ORDERS VON BOCK TO COMMAND HEERESGRUPPE SUD - HIS LAST COMMAND. Important content war-date typed D.S., 1p. 4to., 'Fuhrer Headquarters', Jan. 16, 1942. Hitler orders that Field Marshal FEDOR VON BOCK (1880-1945) be removed from the Fuhrer Reserve and be appointed commander of Heeresgruppe Sud, then heavily engaged in the Ukraine. Von Bock would command the massive force from Jan. 12 to July 12, 1942. Co-signed by Field Marshal JOACHIM KEITEL (1882-1946), German field marshal and army chief of staff under Adolf Hitler, convicted of war crimes and executed at Nuremberg. This period included the immensely successful Second Battle of Kharkov and the initiation of 'Case Blue', the Wehrmacht's plan for the 1942 strategic summer offensive in southern Russia to capture the oil fields of Baku, Grozny and Maikop. However, the outspoken von Bock hoped to remain further north to counter Russia's plans for a counterattack and delay the intended push toward Stalingrad. This irritated Hitler, and on 7 July, Hitler split Army Group South into Army Groups A and B. Army Group A was given to Field Marshal Wilhelm List to command. On 17 July, Hitler relieved Bock as commander of Army Group B, replacing him with Maximilian von Weichs. Bock never again occupied a senior command position...and Army Group B's 6th Army would be destroyed at Stalingrad. Von Bock, his wife and daughter would be killed in a strafing attack four days before war's end.
