Description:

ADOLF HITLER, 'WRITER', PAYS HIS INCOME TAXES ON 'MEIN KAMPF'
ADOLF HITLER (1889 - 1945) Fuhrer of Germany and Nazi Party leader, Hitler's bloody rise to power, his military seizure of most of Europe and North Africa and his genocidal racial policies culminated in suicide in his Berlin bunker as Russian troops approached. A unique and important document, Hitler's 1926 tax return listing his profession as 'Writer' and setting his income at 2,487 Reichsmarks, this being his income for the first year's profits from the sale of 'Mein Kampf'. The document, 2pp. legal folio, is signed in full by Hitler at the conclusion, Hitler adding his address and the date '28 May' 1926. It appears that Hitler paid 262 Rm total taxes on this income, of which 22 Rm were 'church levies'. File holes at the left margin affecting a few printed letters in text, light toning and folds, near fine overall. The first volume of 'Mein Kampf' had been published on July 18, 1925, with the second volume published in 1926. Sales were initially poor, but skyrocketed as Hitler amassed power. At the peak of its sales, Hitler earned $1 million a year in royalties alone, equivalent to $12 million today. Otherwise, at this time Hitler essentially had no other income, having just been released from Landsberg Prison and barred from any public speaking.
