Description:

ADOLF HITLER SIGNED PHOTO IN PRESENTATION FRAME
Superlative, fine association I.S.P., 15 1/4" x 12" overall, b/w , showing Hitler in his pre-war party uniform, defiantly staring at the camera with one hand on his hip, his World War I Iron Cross visible on his chest and a swastika armband wrapped around his left arm. At bottom the future dictator inscribes the photo in dark blue ink: "To my beloved Frau Winter with best wishes for Christmas Adolf Hitler Munich Dec. 1930". The photo is set into a sterling silver frame hallmarked by silversmiths Wellner at bottom, and is engraved in German at bottom: "Munich, Christmas 1930". The verso of the frame is made of dark maroon Bakelite with a matching easel stand, all in excellent condition. The photo, blind-embossed by Hitler's official photographer, Heinrich Hoffmann, is in fine condition. The frame bears a bit of tarnish, but is otherwise also in fine condition. Anni Winter was the head housekeeper at Hitler's Munich apartment, and held that position until Hitler's death fifteen years later. Hitler thought highly of the woman and her husband, an officer in his Leibstandarte-SS bodyguard division. At war's end, Winter managed to cache a number of Hitler's personal possessions, much of which was never discovered by the authorities. In 1954, a Munich court ended a three-year legal squabble over some of those remaining effects, and awarded Winter one well-used suitcase, five copies of Mein Kampf, and three watercolors. A 1954 edition of Time magazine mentions this settlement, as well as the award of a silver-framed photograph - the example we offer here. A very rare oversize signed image and an excellent association.
