Description:

(ADOLF HITLER'S REMAINS)
ELENA RZHEVSKAYA (1919-2017) Soviet interpreter during World War II who worked with Kuznetsov's 3rd Army, responsible for the attack on the Reichstag. She is then believed to have been part of the top secret Soviet unit searching for Adolf Hitler's body in the ruins of the Reichs Chancellery. According to her own account, she was given a box with Hitler's maxillar bridge and jawbone removed during an alleged autopsy because she, as a woman, would be under less scrutiny than her colleagues. Rzhevskaya was then tasked with finding a dentist to verify the remains as those of the Fuhrer. She found dentist Kathe Heusermann, an assistant of Hitler's personal dentist Hugo Blaschke, who confirmed the identity, but this information was later suppressed by Stalin. Rare signed book, her volume ‘Berlin: May 1945. Notes of a Military Interpreter' (Moscow, 1975) 237pp. 8vo., in which Rzhevskaya documents her experiences during the Battle for Berlin. Signed on first free endpaper: ‘Anatoli Emilyevich for good friendship. El[ena] Rzhevskaya. October, Maleyevka'. Light wear to covers, rear cover stained, otherwise very good.
