Description:

ADOLF HITLER, RUDOLF HESS, AND EMIL MAURICE
An extraordinary combination of signatures on a single piece, being those of ADOLF HITLER, his NSDAP Party Secretary RUDOLF HESS, and Hitler's friend, chauffeur, and SS Member No. 2, EMIL MAURICE. The piece is a 6 x 4 in. postcard with the blank side fully fille with an A.L.S. in pencil by Maurice to his father Charles, [Berlin?], June 26, 1936 - the same day SS chief Himmler established the Gestapo and Kripo under Reinhard Heydrich and the Orpo under Kurt Daluege. Although untranslated, Maurice refers often to the 'Fuhrer' and mentions '1926 in Treffen'. He signs as 'Maurice'. On the left side of the address side of the card, Maurice writes his last name in pencil at top, and notes that the card is in remembrance of the tenth anniversary of an unknown event, closing with 'Heil Hitler!' Beneath appear the signatures of RUDOLF HESS and ADOLF HITLER, who send their regards to Maurice's father as well. Fine condition. Even though Maurice had been a party member since 1919, had taken part in the abortive Beer Hall Putsch (for which he was awarded the prestigious Blood Order), and been a bodyguard for Hitler, Himmler considered him to be a serious security risk given his 25% 'Jewish ancestry'. Himmler recommended that Maurice be expelled from the SS, along with other members of his family. To Himmler's annoyance, Hitler stood by his old friend. In a secret letter written on 31 August 1935, Hitler compelled Himmler to make an exception for Maurice and his brothers, who were informally declared 'Honorary Aryans' and allowed to stay in the SS. His father Karl ('Charles') Emil Amadeus Maurice (b. 1864 in Hamburg) was a factory owner, and Emil had two brothers, both of whom also served in the SS.
