ADOLF HITLER (1889 - 1945) Fuhrer of Germany and Nazi Party leader, Hitler's bloody rise to power, his military seizure of most of Europe and North Africa and his genocidal racial policies culminated in suicide in his Berlin bunker as Russian troops approached. HITLER PROMOTES HEINRICH HIMMLER TO REPLACE JULY 20 BOMB PLOT CONSPIRATOR GEN. FRIEDRICH FROMM...TWO DAYS AFTER THE BOMBING Historically important typed D.S., 1p. 4to., 'Fuhrerhauptquartier' [Berlin], July 22, 1944 - only two days after a bomb planted by Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg detonated in Hitler's meeting room in East Prussia, killing four and wounding 13, including Hitler. In the document, Hitler orders that effective July 20, 1944, the day of the attempt on his life, Colonel-General FRIEDRICH FROMM (1888-1945) is to be placed in the roll of officers in the reserves: 'Minister of Armament and Commander of the Replacement Army to the Command Reserve'. At the same time, Reichsminister and Reichsfuhrer-SS HEINRICH HIMMLER (1900-1945) is appointed to replace Fromm as Minister of Armament and Commander of the Replacement Army. Additionally, SS-Obergruppenfuhrer HANS JUTTNER, chief of the SS Leadership Main Office, is appointed Chief of Army Armament and Commander of the Reserve Army. Signed at bottom in blue ink by Hitler, his rapidly-deteriorating condition evident in the signature, and co-signed Lieutenant-General WILHELM BURGDORF (1895-1945) as Chief of Army Personnel Office. Very fine condition. This act would mark the start of Hitler's bloodthirsty mission of revenge against those who plotted his murder. Fromm was Commander in Chief of the Reserve Army, in charge of training and personnel replacement for the German Army, a position he occupied for most of the war. He was aware that some of his subordinates, most notably Claus von Stauffenberg, his chief of staff, were planning Hitler's assassination but Fromm did not have any direct involvement in the conspiracy. Following the failed bombing, Fromm quickly concluded that it was Stauffenberg and the plotters who were behind the explosion, and when he attempted to arrest them, he was confined to a prison cell in the Berlin headquarters of the Replacement Army. Once freed, he ordered Stauffenberg's immediate execution (July 21), mainly in order to save himself from being exposed. After the July 21 executions of the obvious plotters, Fromm went to Joseph Goebbels to claim credit for suppressing the coup, to which Goebbels only said, 'You have been in a damn hurry to get your witnesses below ground.' On the morning of 22 July 1944, Fromm and other members of the conspiracy were arrested. Since the court failed to prove a direct association with the 20 July plotters, he was instead charged and convicted for cowardice before the enemy. Fromm was executed on March 12, 1945. Many thousands of additional 'plotters' would also die in the purges that followed the bombing.
