Description:

ADOLF HITLER
(1889 - 1945) Fuhrer of Germany and Nazi Party leader, Hitler's bloody rise to power, his military seizure of most of Europe and North Africa and his genocidal racial policies culminated in suicide in his Berlin bunker as Russian troops approached. Fine and rare partly-printed D.S. on "Im Namen des Reichs" letterhead, 3pp. legal folio, Berchtesgaden, Aug. 14, 1934, in which Hitler promotes Wehrmacht officers to various positions. Sixteen recipients named would go on to hold a general's rank and win a Knight's Cross. Thus, this 1934 document represents the nucleus of Nazi military leadership, especially in the field, and the responsibility for many early military successes. Listed officers include: The Battle of Belgium's FRITZ KUHNE, WALTHER SCHROTH of the 1st Infantry Division, generals of cavalry GUSTAV HARTENECK and RUDOLF KOCH-ERPACH, major general of Flak Troops WALTER von AXTHELM, JOSEF HARPE, MAX LINDIG, WALTER SCHILLING, Mountain Troops generals HANS SCHLEMMER and HUBERT LANZ, FRIEDRICH KOCH, the "Scapegoat of Stalingrad" FERDINAND HEIM, ALEXANDER VON HARTMANN, FRIEDRICH HERRLEIN, and artillery general ROLF WUTHMANN. It is also of note that several officers would become anti-Hitler conspirators and work in the resistance against him, including: general HANS-GUNTHER von ROST, killed in battle with the Soviets, and plotter FERDINAND SCHAAL. Boldly signed, "Adolf Hitler" in blank ink, with important countersignatures by Minister of Defense WERNER VON BLOMBERG and Army Commander-in-Chief WERNER VON FRITSCH. Both men were dispatched politically in 1938 by Himmler and Goring, whose machinations led Hitler to remove the two in an incident known as the "Blomberg-Fritsch Affair". Fine with a central fold and punch holes, and light soiling at top right of the signature page, none affecting signatures.
