Description:

ADMIRAL RICHARD HOWE MEDAL
A fine medal commemorating a victory of Richard Howe (1725 - 1799), British admiral who sailed with his brother William to America to seek peace with the colonies and secure American loyalty to the crown. When his mission proved a failure, Howe commanded British naval forces for two years, during which he battled a superior fleet under the Count d'Estaing off Newport. The 1.75 in. bronze medal, struck in 1820, features a bust of Howe in uniform on the front with the words 'Earl Howe Adml. Of the White K:G', and the reverse depicts Neptune riding in a horse drawn chariot with the words 'French Fleet defeated off Ushant...VII Sail of the Line Captured I. June MDCCXCIV.' Slightly discolored, else fine. The victory being commemorated by the medal is referred to as 'The Glorious First of June' fought on June 1, 1794 and was the first naval engagement between England and France during the French Revolutionary Wars.
