ADM. ALAN G. KIRK'S D-DAY MESSAGE TO THE FRENCH FLEET
ALAN G. KIRK (1888 - 1963) American admiral, served as an amphibious commander in the Mediterranean in 1942 and 1943 (the Allied invasion of Sicily and Italy). In addition, he was the senior U.S. naval commander during the Normandy landings of June 6, 1944, embarked on the heavy cruiser USS Augusta, and as Commander of U.S. Naval Forces, France during 1944 and 1945. Very rare printed D.S. signed in facsimile and issued in the name of the A.E.F., Western Naval Task Force, aboard the USS AUGUSTA, May 28, 1944, headed 'SECRET' and in French. In full: 'To the commanders of the French vessels of the Western Naval Task Force: I send to you, as to all vessels of my force, copies of a 'to all hands' message. But I add a special salute to the French officers and crew who will go to sea with us. We have watched with admiration the exploits of French warships in the fight against our enemies. Now we set sail together for a battle which, once again, will call upon your courage and will. As an American, there is a special assurance for me in knowing that for the approaching fight, we are going to ring the bell with the French at our side. I am proud to have you with us. I am happy in the thought that the strong American army which is entrusted to us will have the protection and support of a strong French cover and bombardment. To all of you sailors of France: Happy hunting and good luck' Fine condition. On D-Day, the French fleet (under the responsibility of Rear Admiral Robert Jaujard) was divided among several task forces in front of the various landing beaches. It participated in the escort of maritime convoys, the bombardment of the Normandy coasts and the fire support of invading land forces.
