Description:

ADLEY H. GLADDEN AND JAMES L. AUTRY
Pair of rare war-date autograph endorsements signed on one piece by Mississippi Confederate military leaders, both killed in action. The 3 1/2 x 3 1/8 in. endorsement, [n.p., ca. Nov. 6, 1861] first bears an A.E.S. by Lt. Col JAMES L. AUTRY (1830-1862) who writes: 'Recommended Jas. L. Autry Lt. Col. Comdg 9th Miss. Regt'. Autry served as Military Governor of Vicksburg and famously refused to surrender the city after Natchez was taken. During the Battle of Stones River, Autry was cheering his men forward when he was struck in the head with a Minie ball. He died almost immediately. This endorsement is followed by an A.E.S. of Brigadier Gen. ADLEY H. GLADDEN (1810-1862), Confederate brigadier general who led the 1st Louisiana at Shiloh where he was mortally wounded. Gladden writes: 'Respectfully referred to Medical Director', and signs adding rank. The endorsements are matted with a portrait photograph of Gladden and set into an attractive black wood frame.
