Description:

ADLAI STEVENSON I
(1835-1914) 23rd Vice President of the United States, running mate of Grover Cleveland during his second term. Excellent unsigned autograph document, 1p. 4to. [Washington, D.C., April 15, 1893], a set of notes in Stevenson''s hand for a statement made as President of the Senate on that date. In full: "Before any counting the result of the vote just taken, I beg to express my earnest appreciation of the uniform courtesy shown me by the members and officers of this body during the session now closing. For the resolution personal to myself kindly adopted by the senate, I am profoundly grateful. In accordance with the vote just taken, I now declare this extraordinary session of the senate adjourned without delay." At the conclusion, a second contemporary hand has added, in black ink: "Speech of the Vice Pres''t Stevenson in his own handwriting at the close of the extraordinary session of the Senate April 15, 1893." During this session, Sen. Charles Manderson of Nebraska introduced a resolution, unanimously approved, thanking Stevenson for the "impartiality and courtesy with which he has presided over the Senate during its present extraordinary session." Stevenson''s statements are obviously in response to this honor. The statement is drafted on the verso of a printed resolution introduce by Sen. Carey of the Committee on Territories, stating that committee members are authorized to visit New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Oklahoma to obtain information on those territories, with an eye towards admitting them as states. The document bears three horizontal folds, with slight splitting and some chipping at the edges, else very good.
