JOHN QUINCYADAMS(1767-1848) Sixth President of the United States, Secretary of State under Monroe who principally formulated the Monroe Doctrine. A superb association signed book, Adams' Oration on the Life and Character of Gilbert Motier de Lafayette, Gales and Seaton, Washington, 1835, a memorial speech delivered by Adams to Congress on Dec. 31, 1834 following Lafayette's death. The title page bears Adams' bold inscription at top: "The Vice President of the United States from John Quincy Adams". Bound in full red leather with gilt trim, bumped a bit with wear to spine edges, else very good. Adams has inscribed this book for sitting Vice President and future President Martin Van Buren, and undoubtedly this book originates from Van Buren's personal library. This book typically was inscribed by Adams with smaller signed sheets bound into the book - copies signed on the title page by Adams are especially rare and desirable, more so when inscribed by one president to another! $2,000-3,000
