Description:

(1809-1865) Sixteenth President of the United States who led the Union through the Civil War and emancipated the slaves, assassinated. Partly-printed D.S. "Abraham Lincoln" as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, July 30, 1862, the promotion of John Van Deusen DuBois to serve as "Additional Aide de Camp with the rank of Colonel". Co-signed with an enormous signature by Secretary of War EDWIN M. STANTON (1814-1869). Light folds, with the first letter in Stanton's signature blurred, else very good to fine. A nice example for presentation. John Van Deusen DuBois (1833-1879) was a descendant of Abraham Pietersen van Deursen (1607 – c. 1670), a Dutch immigrant who settled in New Amsterdam and become one of the Council of 12 that was the first representative democracy in the Dutch colony. John attended West Point and did frontier duty and until the war commenced. He joined the 1st Missouri Light Artillery, with which he served as colonel. Wounded at Corinth, he received three brevets and retired 1876.
