Description:

ABRAHAM LINCOLN
(1809-1865) Sixteenth President of the United States who led the Union through the Civil War and emancipated the slaves, assassinated. Important partly-printed D.S. "Abraham Lincoln", 1p. 4to., Washington, June 30, 1863, a "draft call" signed the day before North and South would collide with cataclysmic results at Gettysburg. Here, Lincoln seeks additional soldiers from the State of Connecticut. In part: "...I, ABRAHAM LINCOLN...having taken into consideration the number of volunteers and militia furnished by and from the several States...do hereby assign Two Thousand One Hundred and sixty two as the first proportional part of the quota of troops to be furnished by the First DISTRICT OF THE STATE OF Connecticut under this, the first call made by me on the State of Connecticut, under the act approved March 3, 1863, entitled 'An Act for Enrolling and Calling out the National Forces, and for other purposes'...". Light toning at two extreme corners, folds and a few light wrinkles, very boldly signed and overall very good. In New York, this same draft call would provoke the worst riots in American history, with widespread looting, arson, and murder of innocent blacks.
