Description:

ABRAHAM LINCOLN
(1809-1865) Sixteenth President of the United States who led the Union through the Civil War and emancipated the slaves, assassinated. A BRIGADIER GENERAL''S APPOINTMENT FOR CHRISTOPHER C. AUGUR, CRUCIAL IN THE CAPTURE OF LINCOLN''S ASSASSINS Important partly-printed D.S. "Abraham Lincoln" as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, February 6, 1862, in which Lincoln appoints CHRISTOPHER C. AUGUR (1821-1898) to the rank of: "Brigadier General of Volunteers", effective from the previous November 12, 1861. The document bears a fine black ink Lincoln signature at lower-right. It is additionally co-signed by Secretary of War EDWIN M. STANTON (1814-1869). The document is also signed by Adjt. General and Union Brigadier Gen. LORENZO THOMAS (1804-1875) at upper-left. The 13 3/4" x 17 3/4" document has had its margins trimmed with no effect on the text, and there are four marginal nibbles, one just barely grazing the trailing-off of Lincoln''s signature and mentioned only for accuracy. Stanton''s signature is a bit light, otherwise this document is in much better condition than is usually encountered. The lives of those appearing in this document would a few years hence become historically -- and tragically -- intertwined. Augur, previously Commandant of Cadets at West Point, would soon be appointed by Lincoln a major general. He would command at Fredericksburg and Cedar Mountain (severely wounded), and also the Army of the Gulf with distinction during the siege of Port Hudson. On April 14, 1865 Augur was one of the Army officers who were present at the Petersen House where the mortally wounded President Lincoln was taken after he was shot by John Wilkes Booth. At Stanton's request, Augur located a stenographer to take notes as Stanton interviewed witnesses. Augur was also instrumental in mobilizing troops to pursue and eventually capture Booth and his co-conspirators, including the detachment that tracked down and killed Booth...armed with information provided by Stanton. And finally, Augur would serve as the lead escort in processions with Lincoln''s body from the Peterson House and the White House. Sold with a 14" x 18" mounted albumen photograph of Gen. Augur in uniform and sporting enormous sideburns, a distinguished portrait from his later years. There are a few large cracks at upper-left with no loss, but which require restoration. Two pieces.
