ABRAHAM LINCOLN
(1809-1865) Sixteenth President of the United States who led the Union through the Civil War and emancipated the slaves, assassinated. Fine association partly-printed D.S. "Abraham Lincoln" as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, Apr. 16, 1862 - almost three years to the day before his assassination. Lincoln appoints John C. Robinson to serve as "Major in the Second Regiment of Infantry" effective from the previous February 20. Signed at lower-right, co-signed by Secretary of War EDWIN STANTON (1814-1869) and signed as received at the Adjutant General's Office by LORENZO THOMAS (1804-1875), a brigadier general and Chief of Staff to Winfield Scott. Thomas also organized Colored regiments in Mississippi. Ink has only negligibly faded, mentioned here only for accuracy, else in fine condition with no folds. Set in a partially gilt period wood frame. ALSO INCLUDED: fine and rare carte de visite photograph of Robinson in uniform showing him from mid-chest, up. No backstamp, fine. JOHN CLEVELAND ROBINSON (1817–1897) had a long and distinguished career in the Army, fighting in numerous wars and culminating his career as a Union brigadier general of volunteers and brevet major general. Robinson assumed command of a brigade in Kearny's division in the III Corps, fought with distinction at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, and commanded a division in the I Corps at Gettysburg. He and his men fought well on July 1, but eventually had to retire through the streets of the town under the pressure of overwhelming numbers of attacking Confederates. For his valor and meritorious performance at Gettysburg, he was brevetted as a lieutenant colonel in the regular army. He was also a recipient of the Medal of Honor for valor in action in 1864 near Spotsylvania Courthouse, Virginia, where he lost a leg.
