ABRAHAM LINCOLN
(1809-1865) Sixteenth President of the United States who led the Union through the Civil War and emancipated the slaves, assassinated. Partly-printed D.S. "Abraham Lincoln" as President, 1p. folio on vellum, Washington, July 26, 1862, an appointment of Mexican War hero, Joseph A. Haskin as a "...Additional Aide-de-Camp with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel..." Countersigned by Secretary of War EDWIN STANTON. Joseph A. Haskin (1817-1874) served in the Mexican War under Scott, losing an arm at the storming of Chapultepec. Stationed at Baton Rouge, he was forced to surrender his garrison to Confederate Forces in the winter of 1861. He later served around the defenses of Washington later rising to chief of artillery and the rank of brevet brigadier general. With a nice, dark signature of Lincoln. Usual folds, very light cockling, light uneven toning, else fine condition. From the B. T. Fredericks Collection.
