Description:

ABRAHAM LINCOLN
(1809-1865) Sixteenth President of the United States who led the Union through the Civil War and emancipated the slaves, assassinated. Partly-printed D.S. "Abraham Lincoln" as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, Mar. 6, 1863, an appointment of John F. Hazleton to serve as "Assistant Quartermaster of Volunteers with the rank of Captain", boldly signed at bottom, co-signed by Secretary of war EDWIN M. STANTON, and by Union Brigadier General LORENZO THOMAS at top. Typical folds and light soiling, otherwise very good and certainly suitable for framing and display. Hazleton was one of the very few quartermaster brevetted for gallantry, in his case for action at Sayler's Creek, just at war's end.
