(1809-1865) Sixteenth President of the United States who led the Union through the Civil War and emancipated the slaves, assassinated. Forwarding endorsement signed on a leaf accompanying an A.L.S. addressed: "To His Excellency Abraham Lincoln", 4pp. total, 4to., [n.p., n.d., ca. December, 1864], a petition recommending that "Rev. William W. McNair" be appointed "Post-chaplain". McNair is described as: "...a native of Bucks County, Pa; spent his early life at Pennington, New Jersey; graduated at the College and Theological Seminary in Princeton; and for fourteen years had been employed, in Wisconsin, as a missionary of the Presbyterian church. He is an earnest christian...and successful minister of the gospel..." The letter is signed by JOHN MCLEAN, JR. (1800-1886), Presbyterian clergyman and educator who served as the tenth President of Princeton University, CHARLES HODGE (1797�1878), Presbyterian theologian and principal of Princeton Theological Seminary, and five others. On the verso of the last page, Lincoln endorses the letter: "Submitted to the Sec. of War. A. Lincoln Dec. 24, 1864" Split at vertical fold, toned a bit along other folds, else every good. On Feb. 27, 1865 McNair received his commission as Chaplain of the 1st New York Cavalry, and he remained with that regiment until mustered out on June 27, 1865 at Alexandria, Va. During his term of service, the 1st New York Cavalry was widely engaged in at Petersburg and in the Appomattox campaign.
