Description:

ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S "HOUSE DIVIDED" SPEECH
A rare issue of Horace Greeley's New York Tribune, June 24, 1858, 8pp., including a complete transcription of Lincoln's "House Divided" address, which he penned as a Republican Candidate for the U.S. Senate seat of Stephen A Douglas. Printed on p. 3, column A, the speech reads, in very small part: "...REPUBLICAN PRINCIPLES. SPEECH OF THE HON. ABRAHAM LINCOLN...We are now far into the fifth year, since a policy was initiated with the avowed object and confident promise of putting and end to Slavery agitation...In my opinion, it will not cease until a crisis shall have been reached and passed...I believe this Government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free...". Much more. Lincoln's speech is seconded in a superb editorial by Greeley which reads, in small part: "...We need not ask attention to this considered and admirable statement. Mr. Lincoln never fails to make a good speech...and this is one of his best efforts. And its leading positions will be heartily indorsed by the great body of the Republicans of other States...". Light wear, overall very good condition.
