Description:

ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S GENERAL ORDERS NO. 1
Official printed General Orders, No. 1, issued by order of the President of the United States, conveying the details of the Emancipation Proclamation to officers as well as ordinary soldiers in the Union Army and appropriately entitled at head "A Proclamation", 3pp., sm. 8vo., Washington, War Department, Jan. 2, 1863. With this circular the historic news was disseminated to the Union Army "That on the first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, Shall be then thenceforward, and forever free...". Signed in type at the conclusion by Lincoln, Secretary of State William H. Seward and Adjutant General Lorenzo Thomas. In September 1862, Abraham Lincoln had announced the Emancipation Proclamation, which would take effect on January 1, 1863. By this act, slaves in the Confederate states were to be freed. This document brought to the ordinary soldiers not only the official announcement of the Emancipation Proclamation, but knowledge that the objective of the war had been expanded to include the freeing of slaves. Rough left margin from disbinding, else very good.
