ABRAHAM LINCOLN
(1809-1865) Sixteenth President of the United States who led the Union through the Civil War and emancipated the slaves, assassinated. Fine content A.D.S. "Davis & Lincoln p-d" 1p. oblong 8vo., [Danville, Ill.], Oct. 20, 1851 in which Lincoln and Danville attorney O. L. Davis defend John U. Grace, who according to court records, stood accused by Gerard M. Cooper of poising his dog with strychnine and seeking $100 in damages. Lincoln writes that "...said defendant comes and defends the force and injury, when he says he is not guilty in manner and form as the said plaintiff, in his declaration has alleged..." On October 22, 1841 the Jury found for the plaintiff but only awarded Cooper $35 for the loss of his pet. Glassine repairs on verso reinforcing fold and margin, else very good condition.
