Description:

ABRAHAM LINCOLN
(1809-1865) Sixteenth President of the United States who led the Union through the Civil War and emancipated the slaves, assassinated. Very rare partly-printed D.S. 1p. folio, Washington, Apr. 1, 1862, a military appointment of Robert O'Neill Ford as a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. Countersigned by GIDEON WELLES as Secretary of the Navy. Robert O'Neill Ford, though born and raised in Pennsylvania, first joined a New York 30-day militia regiment at the outbreak of war in April, 1861. He was appointed Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps on November 25, 1862 and was later promoted to First Lieutenant on February 6, 1864. He resigned in 1868. Usual folds and cockling, signatures just a bit light: first two letters of Lincoln's last name quite a bit so, bearing original (faded) red paper seal, toning to edges, very good overall. Marine Corps promotions are of the utmost rarity - only about 5,000 were issued.
