Description:

ABRAHAM LINCOLN (3)
(1809-1865) Sixteenth President of the United States who led the Union through the Civil War and emancipated the slaves, assassinated. War-date partly-printed D.S., 1p. folio parchment, Washington, Aug. 17, 1861, being the appointment of IRA K. KNOX to serve as 'First Lieutenant in the Thirteenth Regiment of Infantry'. Very boldly signed by Lincoln in full at lower-right, co-signed by Secretary of War SIMON CAMERON (1799-1889) to the left. Engrossment and Cameron's signature are light but legible, Lincoln's signature dark and flawless, the condition of the document otherwise fine. Beautifully matted in gray with a photo portrait of Lincoln and engraved descriptive plaque, gilt beaded trim surrounding all three pieces, all surrounded by an ornate 32 x 27 in. gilded carved wood gilded frame. Impressive. SOLD WITH: a second pair of complementary documents in matching frame, including a partly printed L.S. by SIMON CAMERON, 1p. 4to., Washington, June 18, 1861 to Ira Knox advising him of his appointment to the rank of first lieutenant effective May 14, 1861 and ordering him to report to 'Col. William T. Sherman' at Jefferson Barracks, Mo. immediately, matted with the transmittal envelope franked by Adjutant Gen. LORENZO THOMAS. Both pieces very good. IRA KILBOURN KNOX (1842-1891) was born in Lawrenceville, Pa. on October 23, 1842, the son of John Knox, one of the justices of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. He served in the Army of the Tennessee where Sherman and was promoted to captain in 1864. He was then assigned to the staff of Gen. James B. McPherson and was with him at the time of his death, later escorting his remains home. He returned to duty and participated in the battles of Jonesboro and Lovejoy Station. In September 1864, he was ordered to Washington where he was assigned to Stanton's staff. On April 15, 1865, he was assigned to duty as military aide to President Abraham Lincoln, which appointment was nullified by the death of the President. Knox was also called to testify at the trial of John Wilkes Booth concerning defendant Michael O'Laughlen.
