Description:

(ABRAHAM LINCOLN) 1860 ELECTIONEERING IN BOSTON
Fine political content letter describing events preceding the Lincoln-Douglas election of 1860, 4pp. 4to., Boston, Oct. 18, 1860 in which "D. H." writes a friend of goings-on. In part: "...Republicans have been manifesting their power, numbers and jubilant feelings by such torch-light 'wde-awake' processions...On Tuesday night last there was a procession of that kind, which was estimated at 10,000 to 15,000, mostly in uniform, with beautiful lanterns or torches...some 3 or 4 miles with 4 abreast...accompanied with many bands...all the people of Boston...were on the Common and in the streets...Last night the Bellevessels tried to do the same thing and made a very pretty show with a little less than half the number...aided by spectators who were present to witness the entrance of the Prince of Wales...I had a fair view of the Prince..many handsome companies of horse and beautiful carriages...he appears very young - a mere boy...". Letter attributed to DANIEL HENSHAW (1783-1863), who would later edit the Lynn Record. Very good.
