(1810 - 1860) American Transcendentalist and Unitarian minister, an abolitionist whose words and popular quotations inspired speeches by Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr. Signature on a small slip, mounted. Glue stains, else very good. WITH: THOMAS WENTWORTH HIGGINSON (1823-1911) American clergyman and army officer, one of the ‘Secret Six' conspirators in John Brown's raid of Harper's Ferry. Higginson was the first to organize Negro regiments in the Civil War, and the author of the story upon which the film ‘Glory' was based. Bold signature on a small card, adding ‘Cambridge, Mass.'. Fine. TOGETHER WITH: JOHN RITCHIE (1831-1887) An abolitionist and captain of the junior militia ordered to John Brown's raid at Harpers Ferry, where he helped Brown and eleven slaves elude Federal troops and escape to Nebraska. A.L.S. ‘Jno. Ritchie' as Member of Congress, 2pp. 4to., Washington, March 13, 1871, to fellow abolitionist Benjamin Perley Poore providing biographical information on himself for the Congressional Directory circular, without any mention of Harpers Ferry whatsoever! Poore (1820-1887) was a prominent editor and author; a friend of Nathaniel Hawthorne, he published the Congressional Directory beginning in 1867. Final page mounted to another sheet, small fold tear at center margin, otherwise very good.
