Description:

ABOLITIONIST SLAVE TRADE SERMON
Printed abolitionist slave trade sermon: "The Injustice and Impolicy of the Slave Trade, and of the Slavery of the Africans: Illustrated in a Sermon Preached Before the Connecticut Society for the Promotion of Freedom...", New Haven, Sep.15, 1791 by Rev. Jonathan Edwards. Printed by Thomas and Samuel Green, 1791, 36pp. 8vo., no covers. Edwards was a well-known theologian. Unlike his father, who was a slave-owner, Jonathan Jr. supported abolition of the slave trade and of slavery. His anti-slavery viewpoint was first evidenced in 1773, when he wrote a series of articles entitled "Some Observations upon the Slavery of Negroes" in the Connecticut Journal and the New-Haven Post-Boy
